Cocoa Butter Review

Updated On:

Overview

Cocoa Butter is also known as Theobroma Oil. It is the pale yellow vegetable fat of the Cocoa bean. Cocoa butter is extracted from the cocoa bean and can be used to make chocolate and cocoa powder. It is also included in a wide range of pharmaceutical products, cosmetics, and skin products. It is one of the most stable fats, and can be stored for two to five years without rancidity occurring. This makes it a good choice for non-food products. It contains natural antioxidants, and is used as an ingredient in a number of face and body creams.

Product Details

Cocoa butter is often used in moisturizing creams and anti-aging creams due to its soft texture and sweet fragrance. It also has well known emollient properties and so is a good choice for dry skin. Skin products containing cocoa butter are normally very reasonably priced and are often chosen by those who have a limited budget. Those who suffer from dry skin may find it useful, and it has been used by those who have eczema or psoriasis with some success in helping these skin disorders. Some people use cocoa butter cream as a soothing after-sun product. The antioxidants in cocoa butter mean that it may prevent some skin damage and give protection from free radicals, which explains why it often shows up on the ingredient lists of anti-aging products that focus on skin protection. There is no evidence however, to suggest that cocoa butter has properties that can diminish or eradicate existing wrinkles.

The Good

  • Face creams containing cocoa butter are normally very reasonably priced.
  • Cocoa butter is a natural product and stores well.
  • Face creams containing cocoa butter can be ordered directly on line.

The Bad

  • Cocoa butter may not be suitable for those who have oily skin as it has a slightly greasy texture.
  • There have been no controlled, standardized tests carried out on cocoa butter to assess its anti-aging properties when used topically.
  • There is no evidence that cocoa butter eradicates or diminishes wrinkles.
  • Cocoa butter is more suitable as a body cream than as an anti-aging face cream.

The Bottom Line

Cocoa Butter certainly does have a number of pleasant properties. It has a very agreeable texture and a lovely sweet fragrance. However if you are looking for a good quality face cream with anti aging-properties that will diminish fine lines and wrinkles as well as prevent signs of aging, then face creams which have cocoa butter as the main ingredient are probably not the best product choice for you. If, however, you are looking for something to help dry patches on your body or if you are looking for a pleasant smelling cream for use after a day at the beach, a product featuring cocoa butter could be a good and reasonably priced choice.
