On this website critics examine a number of popular health and beauty products available on the market today. The information presented on the site about each of the products assessed has been obtained from publicly available sources. Those critics and this web site are sponsored by Rauscher | Bekke, manufacturers of Dermapril-SP. The information on this website is intended to inform and educate consumers. OverviewCosmelan is a patented de-pigmentation treatment. The manufacturers of Cosmelan state that it is designed to reduce melanin patches on the skin known as either Melasma or Chloasma. These dark patches are formed when the production of melanin in the body increases. An increase of melanin in the body can be due to a range of things such as hormonal changes, sun exposure, nicotine exposure or other genetic factors. The treatment action in Cosmelan is based on the inhibition of tyrosinane, an enzyme that is key in the melanin formation process. The manufacturer states that the reduction of dark patches on the skin and an overall difference will be seen after only one week’s time. The manufacturers state that Cosmelan is also useful for clearing up acne. Product DetailsThe Cosmelan de-pigmentation treatment consists of two stages. The first stage should be administered in a certified clinic, and consists of the Cosmelan 1 product being administered to the patients face. The amount and the length of time that the treatment product stays on the face will depend on the patient’s skin type and the severity of the problem. The stage 2 process involves administering the Cosmelan 2 cream, and this can be done at home. We could not find an official website for the product, and so if you want information on this product you will need to look at the websites of the various skin and dermatological clinics which offer this depigmentation treatment. It should not be used if you are using other depigmentation treatments nor should Cosmelan be used at the same time as any treatment involving glycolic acid. The ingredients in Cosmelan 1 are: Titanium Dioxide, Kojic Acid, Phytic Acid, Asorbic Acid, Arbutine, and Azelaic Acid. The ingredients in the Cosmelan 2 face cream are: Titanium Dioxide, Kojic Acid, Phytic Acid and Asorbic Acid. The Good
The Bad
The Bottom LineDespite the fact that Food and Drug Administration lists Titanium Dioxide as exempt from certification, the International Agency for Research on Cancer lists it as a possible carcinogen. We would advise caution with Cosmelan until there is clearer and more precise information available on the safety of this product. However, if your dermatologist recommends Cosmelan to treat your skin pigmentation condition, then they know your skin best. Also, as we have discussed, this is for lightening skin spots, not for treating wrinkles or other effects of aging. Users looking for a casual wrinkle treatment will want to skip Cosmelan.
