L'Oreal Skin Genesis Review

Updated On:

Overview

Skin Genesis from L’Oreal is a two-step skin treatment regimen designed to strengthen the outer layer of your skin which in turn will have skin looking younger, firmer and “bouncier.” This new product from the established cosmetics and skin care manufacturer L’Oreal touts a “green chemistry” pedigree and several newly discovered, proprietary ingredients.

Leading actress Penelope Cruz appears on the product website to endorse L’Oreal Skin Genesis, as does the New York based dermatologist Dr. Lydia Evans. It is strongly implied that Dr. Evans, who has a private NY practice and who proclaims the benefits of a comprehensive approach to skin care, had something to do with the development of the product, although this is never stated outright. Another innovation that L’Oreal is offering with its Skin Genesis line is an “airless pump” for packaging, which they claim will keep the product and ingredients 100% “pure.”

Product Details

The Skin Genesis line focuses on two steps; a Skin Genesis Serum Concentrate, followed by a Skin Genesis SPF 15 Lotion. There is also a Skin Genesis Oil Free Lotion that hydrates skin. Presumably, the SPF lotion is for use in the morning, while the hydrating lotion is to be used before sleeping. Either way, the Serum Concentrate is the backbone of the Skin Genesis line and contains the most proprietary ingredients.

The Skin Genesis Serum concentrate contains the active ingredients Pro-Xylane and Hyaluronic Acid. Pro-Xylane is the result of L’Oreal’s new Green Chemistry policy, and is a beach wood extract said to revitalize and hydrate the outer layer of skin. Hyaluronic Acid is an acid that occurs naturally in skin, and that maintains the outer layer’s strength.

The given list of active ingredients found in Skin Genesis Serum Concentrate is: water, glycerin, alcohol denat, bis-peg-18 methyl ether dimethyl silane, hydroxyethylpiperazine ethane sulfonic acid, sodium hyaluronate, capryl glycol, hydroxypropyltetrahydropyrantriol, ammonium polycaryloyldimethyl taurate, PEG-60 dyrdrogenated castor oil, dyroxyethylcellulose, disodium edta, triethanolamine, oxothiazolidinecarboxylic acid, algae extract, fragrance.

The Good

  • Free sample offered.
  • Dermatologist endorsement on official website.
  • ”Green chemistry” claims to extract the Pro-Xylane ingredient from the wood of beach trees with a new water-based process that will leave trees and soil unharmed.

The Bad

  • Product ingredient list given on website makes no mention of touted active ingredients.
  • Product contains artificial fragrances and other synthetic ingredients, which can irritate some skin.
  • While we are certain a large company such as L’Oreal has tested their product, no actual product studies or trials are offered on the official website.
  • Official website is too slick for its own good, which results in a slow and frustrating experience for anyone looking for a few quick answers from the site.

The Bottom Line

We find it strange that L’Oreal Skin Genesis goes through so much trouble to give us information on Pro-Xylane and Hyaluronic acid, but then does not put these ingredients in their active ingredient list. It looks to us like L’Oreal may be trading on their branded image to sell this product, since we see little that is truly innovative in it, as well as a lot of unpronounceable synthetic ingredients typically found in cheaper drugstore products. Anyone looking for a real wrinkle solution would probably do best to keep searching for a product and a company that are dedicated to fighting wrinkles.
