Overivew
The product Mederma is a topical sun care lotion specifically designed to shield scarred skin from the sun. On the official product website, the makers of Mederma point out that scars require stronger sun protection due to their tendency to darken significantly with heavy sun exposure. Not only do the manufacturers claim the Mederma cream will help protect scars from UVA and UVB rays, they also claim that the cream will help to diminish the overall appearance of scars with consistent use. Finally, the manufacturers go on to claim that their product is the #1 doctor recommended scar treatment currently on the market. Clearly, this is not a wrinkle fighting cream, although if you are concerned about scar skin care, it could definitely be a product to look into.
Mederma is manufactured by Merz Pharmaceuticals, LLC, a company based out of Frankfurt, Germany who are devoted to “addressing unment medical needs.” Apparently, this includes sun protection for scars. In addition to Mederma, Merz also manufacturers Aqua-Glycolic, a glycolic acid based wrinkle fighter, and the nail strengthener Appearex.
Product Details
The manufacturers of Mederma offer a free download of a $3 coupon on the official product website, which is nice. The cream itself is rated SPF30. A different formulation called Mederma For Kids is also available. Mederma is suitable for use anywhere, and the manufacturers claim it will be effective on everything form acne scars to injury scars to stretch marks. There are testimonials posted on the official website. The website also directs consumers to big name drugstores including Wal-Mart, CVS, and Target in order to purchase Mederma. The smaller sized tube is 20g, and this is supposed to last users three months for smaller scars (three inches) while the 50g tube is supposed to last three months for longer scars (10 inches.) There is also a 1-888 contact number to order Mederma directly, but we could find no way to order it from the official website.
The Good
- The website offers consumers a coupon good for $3 off of Mederma.
- Available in many common drugstores.
- SPF 30 should offer adequate sun protection.
The Bad
- Mederma makes no claims to be a wrinkle fighter.
- No free trial sample available.
- Really only of interest if you have scars.
- Does not seem as if Mederma can be ordered directly via the official product website.
The Bottom Line
It may sound a bit redundant, but this clearly a very specific-use product. Mederma is a scar vanishing cream that also claims to be effective at diminishing the user’s scars, be they stretch marks or surgical scars. This sounds like it would definitely be a worthwhile product if you fall into that demographics, and it’s certainly a good idea to grab the $3 coupon off of the official website before hitting the store. But if you’re looking for a skin cream that will treat the major causes of wrinkled skin, we would recommend a peptide based cream that addresses collagen loss instead of a scar cream with an SPF rating.
