Overview
Prevage is a topical cream that was developed by Allergan, a developer and marketer of prescription and non-prescription treatments ranging from eye drops to Botox. Prevage MD is one of their many products and is only available through a physician. Prevage claims to protect your skin from all the environmental stressors that can age you. Things such as cigarette smoke, ozone depletion, sun exposure and air pollution. But can Prevage compete with other topical treatments on the market, much less with Allergan's famous wrinkle fighting Botox injections?
Product Details
PrevageMD is a topical antioxidant cream. Idebenone (the active antioxidant ingredient in PrevageMD) claims to take hold of the different stressors on your skin and make them go away. This idebenone claims to correct any skin problems that you currently have and to protect against future problems. Idebenone is from the quinone family and is promoted commercially as CoenzymeQ10. The PrevageMD website does not tell us specifically if this is a topical CoQ10 cream or not. CoQ10 is linked directly to the body's own production of energy. CoQ10 is a popular addition to many anti-aging treatments in the cosmetic world.
You can use this cream in addition to your own cleansing routine, provided it is not an aggressive one such as a chemical peel or microdermabrasion, which can interact with PrevageMD to cause a high level of skin sensitivity. When using PrevageMD it is recommended to try a test spot for several days to find out if your skin will have a negative reaction before you apply the cream to your whole face. The company also states that you need to use an SPF of at least 15 following the application of PrevageMD.
The Good
- Strong antioxidant delivery.
- One product keeps it simple
- The website does provide doctor locations where you can purchase PrevageMD.
The Bad
- The website only discusses one ingredient. We aren't sure what is actually in PrevageMD.
- You cannot purchase this online. It is only available through a physician.
- After reading much of the information on the website we were left with an impression that PrevageMD can potentially cause a negative reaction with your skin very quickly. If you are using another skin care treatment, this could enhance the effects of the negative reaction.
- This is, ultimately, more of a protective cream similar to a sunscreen than a real wrinkle fighter.
The Bottom Line
Prevage MD is quick and to the point. With one step delivery, you aren't required to buy a whole product set. The issue we run into is a lack of information. While you can search the Frequently Asked Questions section and gain more information, we were still left with more questions than answers about the product itself. The naming of their special antioxidant leaves us with more questions as well. It is in the quinone family, which CoQ10 is part of. So is "antioxidant" just a fancy word for CoQ10? If it is, why not just let us know up front what the ingredient is. The PrevageMD website leaves you with the impression that you will be getting high quality ingredients with this product because it is physician dispensed, but that is not always the case. Finding this out sooner rather than later can be a tough lesson. Also, you may wish to evaluate your skin care priorities, and figure out if your looking for a protective cream or for a wrinkle eraser.
