Overview
The primary goal of Selona appears to be the marketing of a luxury image through posh bath and body products that will both look and feel good on the skin. The products are mainly sold in spas, where you can also indulge in an entire line of Selona treatments. The retail products are also available online through the company website and at select retail stores. Most of the Selona items seem to revolve around full body skin care, with body butters and scrubs topping the list of products available.
Selona is currently run by President and CEO Sharon Brown, who believes that use of unrefined Shea butter in skin care products will moisturize skin best and keep it hydrated longer. We will examine the merits of Shea butter in more detail later in this review. In 2006, Selona was invited to be a part of the gift bags that were handed out at the Grammy awards, which brought the company name into more prominent public view. Today, Selona is still associated with high quality, luxurious bath and body products. However, whether those high end formulas are effective in the fight against aging remains to be seen.
Product Details
The primary ingredient that is touted in many of the Selona products is unrefined Shea butter. According to the Selona website, unrefined Shea butter is a vitamin A cream and a superior moisturizer to other products that contain refined Shea butter. The website also states that clinical studies show that unrefined Shea butter can transform skin into softer, smoother and better looking skin in just four to six weeks. While we agree that Shea butter is an excellent moisturizer, we are skeptical of its abilities to effectively turn back the clock on your skin.
It is true that good skin hydration needs to be a part of any anti-aging program; however, hyaluronic acid is one of the best substances for hydration for these purposes. It is also true that hydration is only part of the anti-aging equation. An effective anti-wrinkle product will contain proven ingredients like argireline, collagen and matrixyl that are known to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and promote a smoother surface for user’s skin.
The Good
- Shea butter is a good ingredient for skin hydration, especially the kind of Shea butter found in Selona products.
- Products are sold in spas and high end stores, suggesting that the quality of the products is excellent and a top choice for beauty industry professionals.
The Bad
- Other proven anti-aging ingredients are not included in the Selona formulas.
- There are no products specifically designed to treat the face.
- Products are expensive and not easily available.
The Bottom Line
If you are looking for a way to pamper your body in luxury, the Selona product line might be the perfect choice for you. However, if anti-aging results are what you are craving, your dollars would probably be better spent elsewhere. As a brand, Selona seem more focused on skin hydration and maintenance than on specifically erasing wrinkles.
